Abstract

The Sounds of Uncertain Walls, released in 2026 as an EP, is an improvised studio recording production, invoking the studio as a compositional tool: Nozomi Omote's improvised vibraphone performance was recorded and extended in the studio by Thomas Green through similarly spontaneous production processes. Found sound and bricolage were incorporated, including Japanese wind, rain and river recordings, and the sounds of a traditional matcha tea ceremony performed by Nozomi Omote. The piece aims to inhabit a tone: calm, hovering, faintly uncanny, and deliberately unhurried. The composition itself is the research: a practical exploration of how spontaneous performance, recording, editing, and environmental sound can be braided into one coherent artistic statement. Thomas and Nozomi collaboratively desgined the EP artwork. The project is inspired by Haruki Murakami’s novel, The City and Its Uncertain Walls, and attempts to translate the novel’s dreamlike atmosphere into sound, drawing on its balance of the ordinary and the strange. The work was requested by Ipswich Gallery for LightPlay, an installation requiring slow-moving, atmospheric music. In that setting the work functions less as a conventional EP than as a sonic environment, a quietly unfolding space in which the listener can drift, pause, and remain within a delicate suspension between material reality and fanciful suggestion.
